Ooka Island Helps Kids Read

Ooka Island is an app aimed at helping beginning readers. Since Sophie has had so much trouble really getting consistent with her reading and sight words, I was thrilled to be offered a chance to try it out.

Unlike some of the apps I’ve tried, Ooka Island is played like a game, making it fun for kids to play. God forbid they know they’re learning, right?

There are simply picture password logins making it easy for kids struggling with reading/writing to load without a parent to help. The game features tons of different adventures and missions, designed to improve phonics, vocabulary, reading comprehension, and other basics of reading fluency.

My favorite part is that the app sends me emails weekly letting me know how long she has played and how she is developing. Unfortunately, Sophie hasn’t played enough yet for me to be able to gauge how effective it is, but I’m very pleased with what I’ve seen so far.

Ooka Island is available for ipad in the App Store. For more information, visit ookaisland.com

I was given full access to the Ooka Island app for purposes of this review. I was not otherwise compensated, and all opinions are my own.
