For the past year, I’ve been having bouts of unexplained anxiety (and some that is TOTALLY explained) off and on. I’ll wake up nervous and twitchy, and I’ll spend all day (or week) feeling like I have butterflies or I’ve forgotten something important. Those emotions are uncomfortable at the best of times, by when there is no obvious underlying cause – and therefore no obvious solution- it can be so frustrating.
Meditation is one of the best ways I’ve found to stop the hamster wheel inside my head, and get my body to stop it’s fight or flight response. But meditation is a difficult habit to cultivate, and it can be super challenging to stop a racing mind all by myself. Instead of trying to focus on my own, I use an app help me tune my brain in to a better frequency.
Simple Habit is a meditation and mindfulness app that offers hundreds of guided meditations across a variety of topics (ex: deep sleep, better focus, or stress relief). Many are only 5 minutes long, which means I can easily fit a tiny mental break into my day when I really need it.
It has helped so much.
On the days when my heart is pounding and my mind feels pulled into a million pieces, I can take 5 or 10 minutes to sit down and listen to a meditation about letting go of anxiety. I’ve noticed that even when I have trouble concentrating during the meditation itself, the effects are still noticeable afterward. Calmer thoughts, slower heart rate, no more feeling like electric current is zipping through my body. So amazing.
Simple Habit also has many other features beyond just the meditations. They work to encourage a community through the app, and you can sign up with friends or participate in challenges like meditating every day for a certain number of days in a row. Simple Habit also charts your progress and keeps a calendar of when you meditated (and for how long).
We are just now heading into the always hectic holiday season, not to mention recovering from one of the ugliest, most contentious presidential elections in history, so if ever there was a time to give meditation a try, this is it! Imagine how nice it will feel returning to the thanksgiving table or dealing with family stress after you’ve taken a brief 5 min mental health break. Simple Habit is available for free download in the App Store, but there are in-app purchases for an enhanced experience. If you would like to try Simple Habit free for a two week period, please use code OMFFP.
I was given a free trial period of Simple Habit premium for the purposes of this review. I was not otherwise compensated, and all opinions are my own.
